Multibillion-dollar sports industry threatened with shutdown in unprecedented show of player power

Black athletes in US sports have refused to play as a sign of protest against racial injustice and police brutality, in a show of player power that threatens a shutdown of America’s multibillion-dollar sports industry.

The move was triggered when the Milwaukee Bucks pulled out a playoff match on Wednesday. The basketball team is based about 40 miles from Kenosha, Wisconsin, where a white police officer shot a black man in the back on Sunday, setting off days of unrest and protest.

The National Basketball Association, Women’s National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and the Western and Southern Open Tennis tournament in New York subsequently announced the postponement of matches.

There is a long history of black US athletes, including boxer Muhammad Ali and baseball player Jackie Robinson, using their influence to take stands against racial inequality.

But the scale of this week’s boycott, which involves unauthorised strike action by unxised players, is without precedent. It threatens to end the sporting season across some of the biggest US leagues and tournaments, which have already been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think that it’s nice that they’re standing up for the issue,” Mr Kushner said in an interview with Politico. “But I’d like to see them start moving into concrete solutions that are productive. And again, President Trump in this White House is willing to work with them.”

That view was echoed by Naomi Osaka, the Japanese tennis star, whose father is a black American, who pulled out of her semi-final at the Western and Southern Open.

“As a black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis,” she wrote on Twitter.
